Best fire pit grills for cooking: flat-top rings, grates and griddles compared

Last updated by the Brevley & Sons editorial team

Short answer: We compared 43 fire pits built to cook on, from $125 to $7,960 at the makers' listed prices. Flat-top plancha rings sear around the fire while the center burns, grates sit over the flames, and griddle combos do both. Pick by how many people you cook for and where it can sit safely.

How to choose

Frequently asked questions

What is a fire pit grill?

A wood fire pit with a cooking surface built in or added: a steel flat-top ring around the bowl, a grate over the fire, or both. You get a campfire and an outdoor kitchen in one piece.

Is a plancha ring better than a grate?

A plancha ring is hottest near the fire and cooler at the outside edge, so you can sear and hold food at once, and small food will not fall through. A grate gives direct flame and char. Many cooks use both.

How far should a fire pit grill be from the house?

Follow the maker manual and your local fire code; many cities require 10 to 25 feet from structures. See our fire pit distance guide.

Do I need to season a steel cooking ring?

Most carbon steel cooktops need oil seasoning before first use and after cleaning. Follow the maker instructions.
