What to consider
Wood or gas
Wood offers crackle and heat. Gas offers instant, clean flame at the turn of a key and may be allowed where wood is restricted.
Materials
Stainless, corten and carbon steel age differently. Heavier gauge steel generally lasts longer outdoors.
Safe placement
Keep clear distance from structures and overhangs, use a non combustible base and check local fire rules.

Common questions
What makes a fire pit smokeless?
Double wall designs pull in air and burn off more smoke in a secondary burn. They reduce smoke but do not remove it entirely.
Can I use a fire pit on a wood deck?
Only with a model and heat shield the maker approves for decks, and only where local codes allow it.
Do I need a permit?
Rules vary by city and county. Check with your local fire department, especially for wood burning.
