Key facts
- IFC 307.4.2: recreational fires (up to 3 ft wide, 2 ft high) at least 25 ft from structures or combustibles.
- IFC 307.4.3: portable outdoor fireplaces per the maker's instructions and at least 15 ft away.
- IFC 307.5: constant attendance and a 4-A extinguisher, hose or sand on hand.
- Smokeless steel pits still burn wood. We found no rule that exempts them.
- Permanent natural gas lines typically need a permit.
Code citations come from the City of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue sheet (effective Jan 5, 2026). The IFC is a model code, and cities and counties amend it, so confirm with your local fire department.

How a smokeless fire pit works
Breeo describes its "patented X AIRFLOW and double wall design [that] pulls in cool air, superheats it, and reburns smoke" (breeo.com). Air enters at the base, rises between the walls, and exits as hot air near the rim, where it burns smoke before it escapes. The fuel is still wood.
How to choose and set up
- Check your HOA rules and any local burn advisory program first.
- Measure your yard: can you keep 15 to 25 feet from the house, fences and trees?
- If not, a gas fire table that follows its maker's clearances may fit better.
- For a permanent gas line, get a permit and a licensed installer.
- Keep an extinguisher or hose nearby and never leave a fire unattended.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a wood, smokeless and gas fire pit?
A wood fire pit burns logs in an open bowl or ring. A smokeless fire pit also burns wood, but a double-walled design pulls in air, heats it and reburns smoke. A gas fire pit burns propane or natural gas through a burner, with no wood or ash. The fuel type drives which fire code rules and air quality advisories apply.
How far does a fire pit need to be from a house?
Under the International Fire Code as adopted by the City of Las Vegas, a recreational fire must be at least 25 feet from structures or combustibles. A portable outdoor fireplace must follow its manufacturer's instructions and stay at least 15 feet away. Many US jurisdictions use the IFC, but local amendments differ, so check with your fire department.
Is a smokeless fire pit exempt from burn rules?
Do not assume so. Smokeless pits like Breeo still burn wood, a solid fuel. We found no Clark County or Las Vegas rule that treats them differently from other wood fires. They most likely fall under the portable outdoor fireplace or recreational fire rules, plus any local burn advisories. Check your local rules before lighting one on a no-burn day.
Do gas fire pits need a permit?
A portable propane fire table usually just follows its manual. A permanent natural gas line is different: it typically needs a plumbing or gas permit. Clark County, for example, reviews gas piping under the Uniform Plumbing Code. We have not verified the exact trigger in every jurisdiction, so ask your building department before trenching a gas line.
Are gas fire pits safer than wood?
They remove sparks, embers and ash, and many are tested to a safety standard. Outdoor GreatRoom says all of its fire features are UL and ULC listed. They still need clearance, attention and the manufacturer's instructions. Outdoor GreatRoom also says gas burns more cleanly than wood, which is the maker's claim rather than our independent test.
Do I need a fire extinguisher near my fire pit?
The City of Las Vegas fire sheet, citing IFC 307.5, says recreational fires and portable outdoor fireplaces must be constantly attended, with a 4-A rated extinguisher or a garden hose, sand or similar on hand. Most jurisdictions using the IFC have a similar rule. Keeping a hose or extinguisher within reach is sensible anywhere you burn.
Can my HOA ban fire pits?
Yes. Many master-planned communities restrict wood fires or require architectural approval for any fire feature. Some allow only attended, contained barbecues used for cooking. Read your CC&Rs and design standards before buying, and get any required approval in writing. Gas fire tables are sometimes allowed where wood fires are not, but check rather than assume.
Can I use a fire pit on a balcony or deck?
Be careful. The City of Las Vegas sheet says grills cannot be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, and LP tanks cannot be stored near exits. Wood fires need 15 to 25 feet from combustibles under the IFC sections it cites. For a wood deck, follow the fire pit maker's instructions and local code exactly.
Are there American-made smokeless fire pits?
Breeo says every Breeo fire pit is "designed and built by craftsmen in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, from American-sourced steel." We keep a dated copy of that claim, and it applies to Breeo fire pits, not its furniture or accessories. Outdoor GreatRoom says some of its products are made abroad, so we only badge its products per item, in writing.
