What to consider

Traditional or infrared

Traditional saunas heat the air with an electric or wood heater, usually to 160 to 195°F. Infrared saunas warm the body directly at lower air temperatures.

Wood species

Cedar, hemlock, spruce and thermally modified woods differ in aroma, durability and cost. Outdoor builds need wood suited to weather.

Power and placement

Many traditional heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit. Plan for a level base, clearances and drainage before delivery.

Common questions

What size sauna do I need?

Plan roughly two feet of bench length per person sitting. A two to four person sauna suits most households.

Do I need an electrician?

For most electric heaters, yes. A licensed electrician should confirm your panel capacity and install a dedicated circuit.

Can a sauna go outdoors?

Barrel and cabin saunas are commonly built for outdoor use. Check that the model is rated for your climate and set it on a level, well drained base.
