Can you put a fire pit on a Trex or composite deck?

Last updated by the Brevley & Sons editorial team

Short answer: A wood-burning fire pit should not sit directly on composite decking. Trex says its boards can soften at 176 °F and recommends a compatible thermal barrier for wood fires, while warning embers can still burn the deck. Built-in gas fire pits are installed by cutting the decking around them. Propane fire tables are the easiest deck option, as long as the table's own manual allows decks and you keep its clearances. Deck-rated wood setups exist (Breeo Y Series, Breeo X Series on the Breeo Base, Solo Stove on its Stand), but the makers still put the risk on you.

Key facts

  • Trex decking "can soften at temperatures as low as 176°F" (Trex FAQ).
  • Wood-burning fire pits are "not recommended directly on top of Trex decking unless using a protective thermal barrier," and embers can still burn the deck beyond it (Trex 2026 installation guide).
  • Gas fire pits built into a Trex deck are installed by cutting around the decking, with fire-resistant material underneath and a stone or similar wall, not on top of the boards (Trex).
  • Propane tables "are generally safe, as they don't produce downward heat" (Trex FAQ).
  • TimberTech warns that heat from fire pits, grills, hot ashes or embers can make its boards melt, sag, warp and discolor.
  • The fire pit's own manual is the other half of the answer. Makers range from "OK on composite decks if clearances are met" (Outdoor GreatRoom) to "never on wooden or composite decks" (Breeo X Series user guide, unless set on the Breeo Base).

What the fire pit makers say

Fire pitOn wood or composite deck?Conditions
Solo Stove (wood)Only on the Stand, and at your own riskStand required at all times on composite and PVC decking; it lifts the pit 2.75 in. Check your decking's heat rating with its maker. Pavers under the Stand for burns over an hour or two on wood decks.
Breeo Y Series (wood)Yes, per BreeoBuilt-in heat shield; extend the legs to the highest setting on composite decking.
Breeo X Series (wood)Not on its own; yes on the Breeo BaseThe X Series user guide says never on wooden or composite decks or stamped concrete. The Breeo Base user guide says the Base gives adequate protection on wood and composite decks, with a Spark Screen required at all times and firewood kept below the rim.
Outdoor GreatRoom fire tables (gas)Yes, per maker24 in from burner edge to combustible side materials, 72 in above the burner to combustible overhead materials, plus model-specific clearances.
The Outdoor Plus fire features (gas)Only with a noncombustible floor panelOn a combustible floor such as wood decking, a noncombustible floor panel must be installed underneath; 48 in clearance around, 18 in from burner to floor, 96 in overhead.

The point of the table: two gas makers give opposite floor rules, and the same Breeo pit goes from "never" to "adequate protection" depending on whether it sits on the Base. There is no general answer for "fire pits on decks." There is only the answer in your fire pit's manual, checked against your decking maker's heat warning.

The safest order of options

  1. Put the fire off the deck. A pad of pavers, gravel or concrete at grade beside the deck takes the decking out of the question. See how far a fire pit must be from the house.
  2. Propane fire table whose manual allows decks. Trex calls propane tables generally safe, and Outdoor GreatRoom clears its tables for composite decks with clearances. Read the manual for your exact model, since others require a noncombustible panel. See how long a 20 lb tank lasts.
  3. Built-in gas pit. Per Trex, cut the decking around it, set it on fire-resistant material and wall it with stone or similar. This is a framing and gas job. In Seattle or Portland it also means a gas permit: see running a natural gas line to a fire pit.
  4. Deck-rated wood pit with the maker's base, plus a thermal barrier. Breeo Y Series, a Breeo X Series on the Breeo Base with its Spark Screen, or Solo Stove on its Stand, on a barrier its maker says suits composite. Both makers still leave the risk with you, and wood fires go dark during burn bans: see Washington burn bans.

Pacific Northwest and code notes

  • Seattle: SFD CAM 5022 says patio fireplaces must not be used on a deck or balcony or within 15 feet of a structure, with single-family homes and duplexes exempt. Recreational fires need 25 feet from structures and combustibles.
  • Apartments and condos: IFC 308.1.4 bars charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, with exceptions including one- and two-family dwellings. Your building, HOA or lease can be stricter.
  • Wet decks still burn. Rain cools the surface, but it does not change the 176 °F softening point or stop embers.
  • Wildfire zones: Trex lists Refuge (Class A flame spread) and several other collections as WUI compliant. That rating is about ember resistance during wildfires, not permission to set a fire pit on the boards.

Before you light it

  • Find your decking brand and line, and read its installation guide's heat section.
  • Read your fire pit's manual for the words "deck," "combustible surface" and "clearance."
  • Check the decking warranty and the fire pit warranty for heat exclusions. Breeo's says it does not cover damage to a patio or deck surface.
  • Keep a hose or extinguisher at hand, and sweep the deck after the fire for stray embers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a fire pit on a Trex deck?

Not a wood-burning pit set directly on the boards. Trex's installation guide says wood-burning fire pits are not recommended directly on Trex decking unless a protective thermal barrier is used, and warns that embers can still land beyond the barrier. Trex's FAQ adds that its decking can soften at temperatures as low as 176 °F. Gas fire pits built into a Trex deck are installed by cutting the decking around them, with fire-resistant material underneath and a stone or similar wall around them. Trex says propane tables are generally safe because they don't produce downward heat.

Can I use a propane fire table on a composite deck?

Often yes, if the fire table's own manual allows it. Trex says propane tables are generally safe on its decking. Outdoor GreatRoom says its fire pits and fire tables are OK on wood and composite decks when the clearances are met, including 24 inches from the burner edge to combustible side materials and 72 inches above the burner to anything combustible overhead. Other makers can require a noncombustible panel under the table, so read the manual for your model.

Does a Solo Stove Stand make a fire pit safe on composite decking?

Solo Stove requires the Stand at all times on composite and PVC decking, and says the Stand lifts the pit 2.75 inches and cuts heat transfer. It also says use on wood or composite decking is at your own risk, that decking products differ in heat resistance, and that you should check with your deck maker or builder or add more elevation or insulation. For burns longer than an hour or two on a wood deck, it suggests pavers under the Stand.

Which Breeo fire pits are allowed on a deck?

Breeo lists the Y Series as able to burn on all surfaces including composite and wood decks because of its built-in heat shield, with the legs extended to the highest setting on composite. The X Series on its own is not: its user guide says never to use it on wooden or composite decks, stamped concrete or any heat-sensitive surface. Breeo's Base user guide says the stainless Breeo Base gives adequate protection on wood and composite decks for X Series and Luxeve pits, but only with a Spark Screen at all times and the firewood kept below the rim.

Will my decking warranty cover heat damage from a fire pit?

Do not count on it. TimberTech's installation guide warns that heat from fire, hot ashes or embers, fire pits and grills can make its boards melt, sag, warp and discolor. Fiberon says improperly installed fire features can damage its decking through direct flame or radiated heat. Breeo's warranty says it does not cover damage to a patio or deck surface. Read your decking warranty for heat exclusions before you light anything.

Is a fire pit on a deck legal in Seattle?

For a single-family home or duplex, the deck rule in Seattle's recreational fire guidance does not apply, but other limits do. Seattle Fire Department CAM 5022 says patio fireplaces must not be used on a deck or balcony or within 15 feet of a structure, with single-family homes and duplexes exempt. Burn bans still apply to everyone. Apartments and condos should assume no.
