The questions that decide whether this goes smoothly: power, base, space, delivery and permits. Answered here, before you order.

Read: Fire pit distance from house
Base
A level, solid base that can carry the weight (168 lb bowl; base about 32 in, 23 lb): non-combustible ground, pavers or a pad.
Permits
Some cities and HOAs regulate burning and backyard structures. Check with yours first.
Install notes
Set wood-burning fire pits on a noncombustible surface such as pavers, stone or concrete, and keep the distance from structures, fences and overhangs that your local fire code requires. Many cities ask for 10 to 25 feet.
Check burn bans before you light. Several Washington and Oregon jurisdictions restrict recreational fires seasonally, and some limit fuel types. Our guides list the current rules.
Not included. Plan for these.

About this fire pit

Big John is Rough & Rigid's largest tilting fire pit: a 40 inch cauldron of 1/4 inch carbon steel cut from upcycled propane tanks and welded by hand in Kansas. It sells for $950 at the maker.

The tilting cradle base lets you angle the bowl toward the group or away from wind and smoke, which is rare on a wood-burning pit. Lids, grill grates and wood racks are sold as add-ons.

  • 40 in cauldron bowl, 1/4 in steel
  • Tilting base to aim heat
  • Lifetime bowl warranty
