Install steps, in order

  1. Choose the spot, ideally close to your electrical panel and on ground that drains.
  2. Have an electrician check panel capacity and quote the 240V circuit.
  3. Check permits with your city or county.
  4. Build the base the maker specifies: firm, level, and rated for the weight.
  5. Assemble the sauna, then have the electrician connect the heater per its manual.
  6. Get the electrical inspection before covering any work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install an outdoor sauna?

Beyond the sauna itself, published cost guides put installation at about $1,000 to $3,500. That covers a dedicated 240V circuit, a base and permits. These are cost-guide estimates, not quotes. Long trenches, a panel upgrade or a full concrete slab can push the total higher. Get local bids from a licensed electrician and contractor before you budget.

How much does an outdoor sauna kit cost?

Maker list prices we found range from about $6,900 to over $12,000. Redwood Outdoors lists barrel saunas at $6,899 to $8,499 and its Grove at $11,699. Almost Heaven's Pinnacle 4-person is listed at $7,575, and a Cedarbrook 5x7 outdoor kit at $12,690. Prices change, so check the maker's current listing.

How much does sauna wiring cost?

Cost guides estimate $500 to $1,500 for a dedicated 240V sauna circuit. A long trench run to the backyard or a panel upgrade can raise that to roughly $2,500 to $4,000 or more. These are estimates from retailer cost guides. Distance from your panel and available capacity drive the price, so ask an electrician to quote it.

How much does a sauna foundation cost?

Cost guides estimate $200 to $2,000 for a base, with a concrete slab around $800 to $2,500 and gravel or pavers costing less. Makers accept several bases. Almost Heaven asks for a firm, level surface rated for 1,000 pounds or more, and Redwood Outdoors lists concrete, a solid deck, compacted gravel or level pavers.

How much does a sauna permit cost?

Cost guides estimate $0 to $500. Fees are set by each jurisdiction. In Washington, L&I and cities such as Seattle publish their own electrical permit fee schedules, and Portland has its own. We have not pulled exact Washington or Oregon fee amounts yet, so check your local fee schedule before budgeting.

Is a gravel base good enough for a barrel sauna?

Several makers accept it. Redwood Outdoors lists compacted gravel among acceptable foundations, and Almost Heaven accepts compacted gravel as long as it is firm and level and rated for 1,000 pounds or more. Almost Heaven says not to set the cradles on bare earth. In wet climates, plan drainage so water does not pool under the sauna.

Can I lower outdoor sauna install costs?

Our editorial suggestions: place the sauna close to your electrical panel to shorten the trench, choose gravel or pavers if your maker allows them, and get an electrician to check panel capacity early so a surprise upgrade does not appear late. In Washington and Oregon, owners who live in the home may do some electrical work themselves with a permit.

Do these costs apply in Washington and Oregon?

Use them as a rough starting point only. We found no Washington or Oregon specific cost guide, and labor rates and permit fees vary by city and county. Get two or three local quotes. Our Washington and Oregon permit guides explain which permits typically apply to a backyard sauna and who can pull them.
